THE DOORS: “L.A. Woman” (Elektra) Review

The final album with Jim Morrison in the lineup is by far their most blues-oriented, and the singer’s poetic ardor is undiminished, though his voice sounds increasingly worn and craggy on some numbers. Actually, some of the straight blues items sound kind of turgid, but that’s more than made up for by several cuts that rate among their finest and most disturbing work. The seven-minute title track was a car-cruising classic that celebrated both the glamour and seediness of Los Angeles; the other long cut, the brooding, jazzy “Riders on the Storm,” was the group at its most melodic and ominous.

This article originally ran in Or, maybe not. Truth be told, The Doors have always been a polarizing band, and their success to destruction ratio was about Morrison, the late poet and frontman, is forever immortalized as a reckless, abusive alcoholic who stumbled around the West in leather pants while muttering inconsistencies about love, death, and Indians.

If anything, they only expand on them. Well, how about their influence? You are the show. Take your ass to the Bellagio and start singing each song here — and loud. Well, maybe not. Though, we doubt guitarist Robby Krieger would have been able to flip his guitar around like Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons. It was a good look on them and would be perfected on their follow-up.

You can thank Yeezy for that one. Morrison will always shine here all the way through. But it was a huge success, earning the band their first No.

Track-by-track: The Doors – LA Woman

Woman is the sixth studio album by the American rock band the Doors , released on April 19, , on Elektra Records. It is the last to feature lead singer Jim Morrison during his lifetime due to his death three months after the album’s release, though he would posthumously appear on the album An American Prayer. Even more so than its predecessors, the album is heavily influenced by blues.

It was recorded without record producer Paul A. Rothchild after he fell out with the group over the perceived lack of quality of their studio performances. Subsequently, the band co-produced the album with longtime sound engineer Bruce Botnick.

“Rothchild was gone, which is one reason why we had so much fun,” Robbie Krieger toldGuitar World in “The warden was gone.” Jim Morrison.

By Genre. The turn of the decade was not a good time for The Doors. The end of the Sixties was marked by a series of collisions between lead singer Jim Morrison and the legal authorities. Morrison had been arrested both in New Haven, Connecticut for indecent and immoral exhibition, breach of peace, resisting arrest and in Phoenix, Arizona where he had been charged along with friend and Warhol actor Tom Baker for abuse of an in-flight attendant and interfering with the flight of an aircraft.

But the biggest problem was his arrest and subsequent conviction for open profanity and indecent exposure at a concert in Miami for which he was given the maximum sentence of two months for the profanity charge and six months for indecent exposure. The conviction and subsequent appeal was hanging over The Doors like a dark cloud as they were uncertain as to whether Morrison would be locked up for a long period of time. Morrison was also unhappy about the packaging of a greatest hits album named 13 which once again featured an old image of himself, thinner and sexier, enlarged against his bandmates keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore.

However, despite this sordid backdrop, The Doors still had one more album to deliver to their record label Elektra before they could negotiate a new contract with another label. Instead of going for the heavy orchestration of their album Soft Parade , the band continued the trajectory of Morrison Hotel , their fifth consecutive gold album which made them the first American rock band to achieve that accolade.

Rothchild whose meticulous pursuit of perfection was starting to wear on the band.

When Rothchild arrived for rehearsals, he was — as he told BAM in — riding high on his previous assignment:. That music was full of heart, the way it’s supposed to be in the studio.
